Speaker Bio
Dr Anthony Cole (Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga) is a kaupapa Māori/Indigenous (Māori) transdisciplinary scholar from New Zealand. Anthony is (i) the founding director of Te Toi Ōhanga (the New Zealand Institute of Māori Economic Development and Innovation), and (ii) Manu Kura (transl. a place of learning) for Ngā Manu o te Whatu (transl. the community development unit) of Te Manaaki Taiao, Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga. The focus of Anthony’s work is Māori community well-being and cultural survival. For the last 20 years, Anthony has
led the development of Indigenous transdisciplinarity and an alternative to New Zealand’s System of National Accounting (SNA) called Māori Genuine Progress Indicator (mGPI) accounting. mGPI accounting relocates the creation of well-being and cultural survival narratives in a Māori community context as part of broader efforts to reclaim, reframe, and reinstate local Māori communal/culturally-mediated economies.
