Dr Anthony Cole (Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga) is a kaupapa Māori/indigenous (Māori) transdisciplinary scholar from New Zealand. Anthony is the founding director of Te Toi Ōhanga (the New Zealand Institute of Māori economic development and innovation), and Manu Kura (transl. the bringer of learning) for Ngā Manu o te Whatu (transl. the Māori community development unit) of Te Manaaki Taiao, Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga. The focus of Anthony’s work is Māori community wellbeing and cultural survival. For the last 17 years Anthony has led the development of indigenous transdisciplinarity, and an alternative to New Zealand’s System of National Accounting (SNA) called Māori Genuine Progress indicator (mGPI) accounting. mGPI accounting is accounting for, from and by Māori communities. mGPI accounting relocates the creation of wellbeing, and cultural survival narratives in an indigenous (Māori) community context as part of broader efforts to reclaim, reframe, and reinstate distinctly Māori cultural/communal expression of economics.
